Ten Essence Herbal Formula, a classic Chinese medicine formula originating from the Tang Dynasty's “Biquanqi Qianjin Yaofang”, has been highly regarded by Chinese medicine practitioners since ancient times due to its excellent therapeutic efficacy. This formula was specially designed for the symptom of “the coldness of the gallbladder that prevents sleep after a serious illness”, and through the continuous development and improvement of the Song, Ming and Qing dynasties, its scope of treatment was gradually expanded and it became the first choice for the treatment of gallbladder depression and phlegm disturbances.

Ten Essence Herbal Formula is mainly composed of six Chinese herbs: Chen Pi, Semixia, Bamboo Root, Citrus Aurantium, Poria and Licorice. Among them, Semixia, as the principal herb, has the efficacy of drying dampness, resolving phlegm, harmonizing the stomach and lowering rebelliousness, which can make phlegm descend with qi, thus eliminating the phlegm evil. Bamboo Root, as a subject medicine, is sweet and slightly cold in nature, which can clear away heat, resolve phlegm, remove vexation and stop vomiting. Together with Semixia, one is warm and the other is cool, and together they work to resolve phlegm and harmonize the stomach, stopping vomiting and removing vexation. Chen Pi and Hovenia Citri Reticulatae are used as adjuvants for regulating qi and resolving phlegm. Chen Pi regulates qi and promotes stagnation, dries dampness and resolves phlegm, while Hovenia Citri Reticulatae reduces qi and resolves phlegm, opens up knots and removes fullness. Poria strengthens the spleen and seeps away dampness to eliminate the source of phlegm, while ginger and jujube harmonize the spleen and stomach, and licorice harmonizes the medicinal properties, together as the adjuvant, making the whole formula mild, not cold and not dry.
